Philipp Lahm Among 25 Honoured With Germany's Highest Civilian Award
Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier honoured 25 individuals with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany on October 2, 2025, in Berlin. Among the recipients was former professional footballer and World Cup winner, Philipp Lahm. The awardees, comprising 16 women and 9 men, were recognised for their exceptional commitment to democracy and significant societal contributions across various fields.
Lahm, who captained Germany to victory in the 2014 World Cup, was honoured for his dedication to building educational institutions for disadvantaged children and youth in Germany and South Africa through his Philipp Lahm Foundation for Sport and Education, established in 2007. The foundation supports over 10,000 children and young people annually.
The recipients also included individuals from diverse backgrounds such as digital transformation, combating violence and extremism, environmental protection, volunteering, science, art, and culture. Their collective efforts have significantly impacted German democracy and align with the values of democracy and social responsibility.
The Order of Merit recipients, including Philipp Lahm, represent a cross-section of German society, each making a unique and valuable contribution. Their recognition serves as an inspiration for others to engage in societal betterment and uphold the principles of democracy.
