Philippine lawmaker suspended over ‘incendiary’ social media posts

The House of Representatives has suspended Cavite Fourth District Representative Kiko Barzaga for 60 days without pay. The decision follows accusations of disorderly conduct linked to his social media activity. Lawmakers overwhelmingly backed the penalty after a heated ethics committee hearing last year.

The suspension stems from Barzaga’s ‘incendiary’ posts, which included a lewd photo, displays of wealth, and sharp criticisms of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez. The ethics committee ruled that these violated standards of conduct for public officials.

The suspension takes immediate effect, leaving Barzaga’s district without representation in Congress for two months. His case highlights the growing scrutiny over lawmakers’ online behaviour. The ethics committee’s ruling sets a precedent for handling similar conduct in future.
