Philippine tourism leadership in flux after Frasco's reassignment to climate role

A leadership shift is underway at the Department of Tourism (DOT) after President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. appointed former Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco to a new role. On March 12, 2026, Frasco became Presidential Adviser for Sustainable and Resilient Communities, leaving her previous position vacant. The Palace has yet to confirm a permanent replacement, but changes are already in motion.

Christina Frasco had led the DOT since 2022, focusing on tourism promotion and local partnerships. Her reassignment shifts her responsibilities toward national initiatives addressing climate resilience at the community level. With her departure, Tourism Undersecretary Verna Buensuceso now serves as officer-in-charge of the department.

Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro stated that no official decision or document has been signed regarding a permanent DOT leader. She also declined to comment on speculation that trade diplomat Dita Angara-Mathay might take over the role. Instead, Castro urged the public to wait for an official announcement from the President. The DOT had faced criticism during Frasco's tenure over its tourism campaigns and efforts to boost visitor numbers. Her exit marks a transition period for the agency as it adjusts to new leadership.

Frasco's move to a climate-focused advisory position leaves the DOT under temporary leadership. Until an official appointment is made, Buensuceso will oversee the department's operations. The Palace has not provided a timeline for naming a permanent successor.
