Philippines freezes prices on 196 essential goods until April 2026
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has announced a price freeze on essential goods until April 17, 2026. The move comes as global shipping costs rise due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Major companies have agreed to keep prices steady for now, but concerns remain about long-term affordability. The DTI secured commitments from 17 large corporations, including Nestle Philippines, San Miguel Foods, and Universal Robina Corp., to maintain current prices for 196 items. These include canned sardines, coffee, and laundry soap. The Canned Sardines Association of the Philippines and major retail chains also joined the initiative.
A 60-day price freeze normally follows a declared state of calamity, but the recent national energy emergency did not trigger an automatic freeze. Instead, companies are voluntarily absorbing higher logistics and inventory costs rather than passing them to consumers.
Despite the temporary relief, some remain sceptical. Jeremee Solano, a business owner, called the measure 'useless' because of its limited duration. Gil Aguaviva, a health maintenance worker, warned that families already struggling will still face financial strain after April 16. Lou Labiste, an employee in the BPO sector, added that wages are not rising fast enough to match potential price hikes.
Industry sources note that promotional discounts on these products often occur every 2-3 months. Consumers have been advised to stock up during sales rather than buy at regular prices. The price freeze will last until mid-April 2026, giving temporary relief from rising global trade costs. Companies have pledged to hold prices steady, but the long-term impact on household budgets remains uncertain. The DTI's agreement covers key goods, though future adjustments may still affect shoppers.
