Philippines Proposes Permanent ASEAN Economic Task Force Amid Trade Tensions

The Philippines is pushing for a permanent economic task force within ASEAN to strengthen regional coordination. As the current chair of the 11-member bloc, it wants the ASEAN Geoeconomics Task Force to become an official body. The move comes as global trade tensions and economic pressures grow more intense.

The ASEAN Geoeconomics Task Force was first set up to help member states respond to rising global trade uncertainties. Its role includes developing joint strategies to manage economic disruptions while keeping markets open. If formalised, the group would allow ASEAN to act more quickly and cohesively in shifting economic conditions.

ASEAN already maintains major trade ties with partners outside the region. Free trade deals are in place with the EU—covering Singapore since 2019 and Vietnam since 2020—while negotiations with Indonesia wrapped up in 2025. Talks continue with Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. Other key agreements include discussions with Canada (ACAFTA), a review of the India pact (AITIGA), updates to the Korea deal (AKFTA), and a feasibility study for a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) free trade area. The bloc is also part of the multilateral Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

Making the task force permanent would help ASEAN navigate economic challenges as a united front. With geopolitical tensions and trade pressures increasing, closer coordination is seen as essential for stability and growth.

The proposed ASEAN Geoeconomic Group would give the region a stronger voice in global economic discussions. By anticipating disruptions and aligning policies, member states aim to protect trade flows and investment. The outcome of the Philippines' proposal will shape how ASEAN responds to future economic shifts.
