Pilot perishes; Ukrainian military confirms loss of F-16 jet
In an escalation of the ongoing conflict, Russia launched a large-scale nighttime missile and drone attack on Ukraine, marking the most significant strike of the war so far. According to reports, Russia deployed a total of 537 drones and missiles, with 477 drones and 60 missiles targeting multiple cities such as Kyiv, Cherkasy, Lviv, Poltava, Kharkiv, Kherson, and Mykolaiv.
The Ukrainian forces demonstrated remarkable resilience during the defense against this massive assault. Ukrainian air defenses managed to shoot down around 436 drones and 38 missiles, with the assistance of U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets. Ukrainian pilots flying these F-16s shot down "dozens" of attacking drones amid highly dangerous air combat conditions.
However, the defense was not without loss. One Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet and its pilot were lost during the efforts to repel the attack, with the pilot killed in action. This tragic loss marks the third time an F-16 jet has been lost during the war, according to the Ukrainian military.
The attack also included ballistic missiles, with Russia launching seven Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles and four Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles. Despite the efforts of Ukrainian forces, only one Iskander missile was shot down, but none of the Kinzhals. This underscores the challenge of defending against these advanced weapons.
The scale and intensity of the attack have highlighted Ukraine's urgent need to strengthen its air defense systems. Calls for increased support and the delivery of advanced U.S. air defense technology such as Patriot missile systems have been made to better defend against drone swarms and ballistic missile strikes.
This attack represents Moscow's most massive and complex aerial strike campaign to date, demonstrating increased use of drones and ballistic missiles to target both military and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. The incident marks another escalation in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
The Ukrainian military reported air strikes overnight, with the Air Force reporting details of the attack on the Telegram messaging app. The damaged aircraft, following the pilot's last successful shot down of an air target, began to lose altitude. Despite the pilot's efforts to fly the jet away from a settlement, it ultimately crashed, causing further damage.
