Pingree Presses EPA: Speed Up 'Forever Chemical' PFNA Report
Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) has urged EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin to speed up responses regarding the delayed results of a report on the health effects of 'forever chemicals', specifically perfluoronanoic acid (PFNA). Pingree sent a letter on Thursday, expressing concern over the EPA's delay in publishing a final toxicity report on PFNA, which can have significant health impacts.
PFNA, one of six per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, has been linked to developmental, liver, and reproductive risks. The Trump administration had been reconsidering drinking water limits for these substances, but the Biden administration reinstated them. However, a ProPublica exposé revealed that the EPA has been slow in publishing its final toxicity report on PFNA, which has raised concerns among lawmakers like Pingree.
In her letter, Pingree urged Zeldin to provide answers by the end of the year, emphasizing the importance of understanding the health impacts of PFNA and other 'forever chemicals' that persist in the environment and accumulate in human bodies.
Pingree's letter highlights the ongoing issue of the EPA's delayed response to the health risks of PFNA. With the stakes high, Pingree is pushing for swift action to ensure the safety of Americans from these potentially harmful chemicals.
