Evangelical Church in Germany opposes conscription - Pistorius Pushes for Military Conscription in Bundestag
Bundesverteidigungsminister Boris Pistorius is pushing for the reintroduction of military conscription (Wehrdienst) in the Bundestag. Negotiators from Union and SPD have agreed on a four-stage model, including a lottery for conscription. The law is set to be debated in the Bundestag plenary session on Thursday.
The proposed model also includes 'need-based conscription' if volunteer numbers fall short. However, EKD Chairperson Fehrs has called for a balanced approach, advocating for both military and civilian service. The Protestant Church in Germany (EKD) opposes the reinstatement of military conscription.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has criticized the agreed compromise on the military service law. Fehrs has suggested a 'right to voluntary service' to accommodate diverse skills and life situations among young people.
The debate on military conscription continues in the Bundestag, with the law scheduled for discussion on Thursday. The agreed model includes a lottery for conscription and 'need-based conscription'. Meanwhile, the EKD calls for balance and the Defense Minister expresses dissatisfaction with the compromise.
