In a twist of events, an EasyJet flight headed from London to the picturesque Greek island of Santorini found itself diverting to Munich. The culprit? A mystifying technical glitch aboard the aircraft that leaked fumes, causing a distinctive smoke smell in the cabin[1].

According to an EasyJet spokesperson, the suspect smell of smoke didn't actually produce any smoke particles, prompting the pilots to file an urgent report, but not triggering a Mayday call, which would signal an immediate emergency. The Airbus A320 aircraft had taken flight from London Gatwick Airport, destined for Santorini on Tuesday afternoon.

Upon detecting the unusual scent, the pilots reported the issue and decided to divert the flight towards Munich Airport, where it safely touched down. Emergency services were stood by on the tarmac, described by EasyJet as a "purely routine and precautionary measure." The passengers eventually resumed their journey to Santorini later that evening aboard a replacement airplane.

The Commission is yet to make a decision on whether this aviation incident falls under the scope of the specific Regulation in the industry, especially concerning the finance sector, given the emergency landing of the EasyJet flight. Regardless, the incident has brought to light the need for stricter safety protocols in transportation, including aviation.
