Plane carrying medical personnel crashes in Navajo Nation, causing the deaths of four individuals

A tragic incident has shaken the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona, as a small medical transport plane, operated by CSI Aviation, crashed while attempting to land at Chinle Municipal Airport on August 5, 2025. The plane was en route to pick up a critical care patient at the federal Indian Health Service hospital in Chinle, with plans to return to Albuquerque afterwards. Sadly, all four people on board were killed in the accident.
The crash occurred in the early afternoon, with reports of black smoke at the airport coming in around 12:44 p.m. The Navajo Police Department, Navajo Nation authorities, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are all actively investigating the cause of the crash. At this time, no official cause has been reported, and the investigations are ongoing.
CSI Aviation has confirmed the deaths and expressed their condolences but has not provided further details on the cause. The NTSB and FAA have taken the lead in the investigation, working diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The tragedy has been felt deeply across the Navajo Nation, with the medical personnel involved being part of the air and first responder community. Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren expressed heartbreak over the loss of these dedicated individuals. He extended his condolences to the families, colleagues, and all who are grieving, honouring the service, sacrifice, and love shown by the medical personnel in their work.
The Chinle Airport has been temporarily closed for the duration of the investigation. As more information becomes available, updates will be provided to keep the community informed.
