Plane crash occurs in Amur region involving An-24 aircraft.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Angara Airlines Flight 2311, an Antonov An-24 passenger plane, met with a fatal accident on July 24, 2025. The aircraft went down about 16 kilometers from Tynda Airport in the Amur Oblast, Russia, during its second landing attempt in poor visibility conditions.
The Fateful Flight
The Antonov An-24 joined the "Angara" fleet in July 2021, having previously flown for Soviet "Aeroflot", "Nizhny Novgorod Airlines", "Izhavia", and other airlines. On the fateful day, the plane was carrying 43 passengers, including 5 children, and 6 crew members.
Search and Rescue Operations
As soon as the aircraft disappeared from radar, a mobile search group was dispatched to the last known location. Additional helicopters were prepared for the search, and rescuers were able to locate the fuselage of the plane at 09:52 Moscow time.
A History of Incidents
The Antonov An-24, a Soviet-era turboprop aircraft, has a troubled past, with numerous incidents and accidents over the years. Although specific details about a lighting mast collision incident in 2018 are not available, it is known that the aircraft involved in the July 2025 crash had been involved in four incidents since 2018.
Despite passing a recent technical inspection and having its airworthiness certificate renewed in 2021 with a validity lasting until 2036, the aircraft crashed during a scheduled domestic flight from Ignatyevo Airport to Tynda Airport. This tragic event raises concerns about the safety and operational viability of aging aircraft in Russia's aviation sector.
Ongoing Operations and Controversies
Despite these concerns, more than 75 Antonov An-24 aircraft are still in operation, primarily in remote areas due to limited access to more modern aircraft, partly due to Western sanctions affecting Russia's aviation sector.
The crash of Angara Airlines Flight 2311 has led to a criminal investigation into suspected violations of air traffic and transport rules. The incident has also sparked a broader discussion about the continued use of aging aircraft in remote Russian regions.
