PM Modi honours Rani Velu Nachiyar’s fearless legacy on her 294th birth anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured Rani Velu Nachiyar on her 294th birth anniversary. The leader praised her as one of India's bravest warriors and a symbol of resistance against colonial rule. Her legacy, he noted, remains a driving force for the nation's progress today.

Born in 1730, Rani Velu Nachiyar made history as the first Indian queen to challenge the East India Company in battle. She successfully reclaimed her kingdom of Sivaganga, demonstrating both military skill and strategic foresight.

Modi highlighted her exceptional courage, tactical brilliance, and dedication to just governance. He also emphasised her role in preserving cultural pride during a turbulent period. The prime minister described her as a visionary whose leadership continues to inspire generations. Her resistance was part of a broader struggle in South India. Another key figure, Veerapandiya Kattabomman, led the first major uprising against the East India Company in 1799. Like Nachiyar, he fought to reclaim lost territories, including Sivaganga, reinforcing the region's spirit of defiance.

Nachiyar's achievements in warfare and administration remain widely recognised. Modi's tribute underscored her enduring influence on India's fight for self-rule. Her story is still taught as a lesson in resilience and leadership across the country.
