PM Modi launches Assam's new rail projects to boost connectivity and jobs
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled a series of railway projects in Assam aimed at boosting regional connectivity. Speaking via video link from Guwahati, he dedicated new infrastructure and launched train services designed to improve transport links in Kokrajhar and beyond.
The centrepiece of the event was the inauguration of a new Railway Wagon POH (Periodic Overhauling) Workshop at Bashbari, Kokrajhar. Built at a cost of Rs 256 crore, the facility will enhance maintenance capacity for rolling stock while creating local jobs.
Three new passenger trains were also flagged off during the ceremony. The Kamakhya-Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express, Guwahati-New Jalpaigudi Express, and Narangi-Agartala Express will provide direct connections to key destinations. These services follow recent upgrades that brought Vande Bharat and Rajdhani Express stoppages to Kokrajhar station, reflecting its growing importance. Further plans include a proposed rail link to Bhutan and a modernised Kokrajhar station. Officials stated these developments would position the area as a major logistics hub, supporting trade, tourism, and daily commutes for students and medical travellers.
The projects form part of wider efforts to strengthen Assam's transport network. With improved maintenance facilities, expanded passenger routes, and future cross-border connections, the region expects economic growth and better access to essential services. The initiatives follow earlier commitments to upgrade railway infrastructure across Northeast India.
