PM Modi Unveils Rare Buddha Relics in Historic Delhi Exposition
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a major exhibition of sacred Buddhist relics in New Delhi on January 3, 2023. Titled The Light & the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One, the exposition brings together rare artefacts linked to Bhagwan Buddha’s early life. The event marks the return of these relics after more than a century abroad and highlights India’s enduring connection to Buddhist culture.
The Grand International Exposition will take place at the Rai Pithora Cultural Complex in Delhi, beginning at 11 a.m. Organised by the Indian government alongside Buddhist groups and cultural bodies, it showcases the Piprahwa relics—some of the earliest and most significant archaeological finds tied to Bhagwan Buddha. These relics were recently repatriated through coordinated efforts between government agencies, institutions, and private partners.
The Piprahwa site, where the relics originated, is archaeologically linked to ancient Kapilavastu, the place where Bhagwan Buddha spent his formative years before renouncing worldly life. Their return underscores India’s commitment to preserving its spiritual and cultural legacy. The exhibition also features additional authentic relics and archaeological materials from the same region, offering visitors a rare glimpse into early Buddhist history. Prime Minister Modi’s involvement in the inauguration reflects his emphasis on safeguarding India’s rich cultural heritage. The exposition serves as both a scholarly resource and a public celebration of the country’s deep civilisational ties to Buddhist teachings.
The event will provide access to relics of immense historical value, reinforcing their significance in the study of early Buddhism. Their repatriation and display also demonstrate the success of cross-sector collaboration in cultural preservation. The exhibition remains open to the public following the inauguration.
