Protests against the A39 autobahn expansion have escalated in Lüneburg Forest. Around 40 activists gathered under the slogan ‘Lüni bleibt’ to defend illegal tree platforms built in opposition to the project. Police intervened after a bottle was thrown at officers and a patrol car’s tyres were damaged.
The environmental group Umweltaktivisten erected two tree platforms in the forest earlier this year. Authorities deemed them illegal but had not planned evictions. On the day of the protest, police stopped activists from building further structures and ordered the removal of construction materials.
Several people were physically restrained as tensions rose. Officers launched investigations into breaches of public order and dangerous interference with road traffic. Despite the clashes, police confirmed they would uphold the right to protest while preventing further illegal construction. The two existing platforms remained untouched during the operation. Authorities reiterated that the structures posed risks to public safety and order.
The protest ended with no immediate evictions, but investigations into the incidents continue. Police have maintained a presence to prevent new illegal constructions. The standoff highlights ongoing resistance to the A39 expansion plans.
