Poll: Sympathy in Poland for Germany Declines Sharply - Poland and Germany Clash Over History and Future Relations
A new survey has revealed deep divisions between Poland and Germany over historical responsibility and current relations. The 2023 Barometer study, conducted by Ipsos for the German-Polish Institute, polled 1,000 people in each country. Its findings highlight how differing views on World War II reparations and political polarisation continue to shape perceptions across the border.
The survey found that only 35% of Poles believe Germany helps improve European cooperation, while 32% think it worsens disputes. Political and media polarisation in Poland plays a major role in shaping these views. Meanwhile, 58% of Poles insist Germany should do more to address World War II crimes, compared to just 25% of Germans who agree.
The 2023 Barometer underscores persistent tensions between Poland and Germany. While Poles emphasise unresolved historical justice, Germans look ahead to shared challenges. The findings suggest that without addressing these differences, political and public relations may remain strained.
