Police officer arrested in 2.2 million ruble bribery scandal over case dismissal
A criminal case in 2024 has uncovered a bribery scheme involving a police officer, a lawyer, and a suspect. The incident began when an investigator looked into a grievous bodily harm case. It later escalated into allegations of corruption within the local Interior Ministry. The suspect, facing serious charges, contacted a lawyer known for connections in law enforcement. The lawyer promised to secure a pretrial measure that would avoid detention. To do this, they approached a deputy head of a local Interior Ministry department in July 2024.
The police officer agreed to intervene but demanded a bribe of 1.2 million rubles. The suspect initially accepted the terms but later raised the bribe to 2.2 million rubles. Despite the increase, the officer took the money. After the payment, the suspect’s charges were reclassified under a less severe article. They were then placed under a non-custodial pretrial measure. Authorities later seized the bribe money and opened a criminal case against the officer. The officer was remanded in custody while the investigation continues.
The bribe money has been recovered, and the police officer now faces criminal proceedings. The suspect’s charges were reduced, and they remain under a non-custodial pretrial measure. The case highlights ongoing scrutiny of corruption within law enforcement.
