Pope Francis Begins Historic Turkey and Lebanon Visit With Unity Message
Pope Francis has begun a six-day visit to Turkey and Lebanon, focusing on unity and peace among different faiths. On his journey, he took time to greet journalists and share personal insights—including his daily Wordle habit.
The trip marks an important step in fostering dialogue between religions, with stops in two nations home to some of the world’s oldest Christian communities.
Before landing, the Pope sent warm Thanksgiving wishes to Americans. He also revealed a lighthearted side, admitting he plays Wordle daily and changes his starter word each time. Journalists on board received thanks for their role in spreading truth and harmony.
Upon arrival in Turkey, his first day included solemn and diplomatic moments. He laid a wreath at Atatürk’s mausoleum, met President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and visited the Diyanet (Turkey’s religious affairs directorate). A meeting with the country’s chief rabbi was also scheduled.
Later in the trip, the Pope will travel to Istanbul to meet Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. Together, they will take part in events marking the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, a landmark in Christian history.
Gifts from well-wishers added a personal touch to the journey. On the papal plane, he received pumpkin and pecan pies, a baseball bat, and even White Sox-themed slippers and socks.
The visit to Lebanon will follow, continuing the theme of brotherhood across religions. Both countries hold deep significance for early Christianity, making the trip a bridge between past and present.
The Pope’s journey highlights efforts to strengthen ties between faiths in a region rich with history. Meetings with religious and political leaders aim to reinforce messages of peace and cooperation.
His personal gestures—from Thanksgiving greetings to playful gifts—reflect a blend of tradition and warmth during the trip.
