Pope's New Encyclical Challenges AI's Threat to Human Dignity and Work

Pope Leo XIV will release his new encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, on Pentecost Monday. The document addresses the growing influence of artificial intelligence and its impact on work, society, and human dignity. Heiner Wilmer, the newly elected president of the German Bishops’ Conference, has called the text a direct response to the power of major tech corporations. Wilmer highlighted how digital giants now dominate public debate, control information, and reshape democracy and labour markets. He warned that AI is not just an economic issue but a profound societal challenge. The technology creates new opportunities but also places workers under intense pressure, displacing jobs and enforcing relentless efficiency demands.

The encyclical comes as the Church reaffirms its stance on human labour. Wilmer stressed that work must never be reduced to a mere factor of production. Instead, it should be seen as an expression of human dignity and a means of social participation. According to Wilmer, AI raises serious questions about justice, fairness, and the protection of human worth. The Church’s intervention seeks to address these concerns at a time when technological change is accelerating.

The encyclical will be published during a period of rapid digital transformation. It aims to guide discussions on how AI affects labour, democracy, and human rights. The Church’s position underscores the need to balance technological progress with the protection of fundamental values.
