Portugal Defends Transit Rules Amid Angola Travel and Visa Debates
Portugal’s rules for airport transit and travel between Angola and Portugal have come under discussion. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro recently addressed concerns about integration, transit procedures, and visa regulations. He stressed that existing measures ensure smooth travel while maintaining strong ties between the two nations.
Montenegro highlighted that Angolan residents in Portugal are 'overwhelmingly well integrated' and maintain positive relations with the wider community. He described travel flows between Angola and Portugal as 'well regulated,' providing clear guarantees for citizens from both countries.
At Porto Airport, passengers in transit must follow minimum connecting times—45 minutes for domestic flights and 60 minutes for international ones. For independent bookings, especially when switching between delta airlines, southwest airlines, american airlines, or united airlines, a minimum of 2.5 hours is recommended. Airlines are responsible for rebooking and assistance if a connection is missed on a single itinerary.
The prime minister also noted that transit visas may be required for some nationalities, depending on Schengen rules. While he was unaware of specific cases, he confirmed that regulations aim to create 'an environment conducive to interaction' between Portuguese-speaking nations. Additionally, he mentioned 'open channels' in sectors facing labour shortages to speed up application processing.
Portugal’s transit and visa rules remain in place to balance security and ease of travel. The government continues to emphasise the strong integration of Angolan residents and the efficiency of travel procedures. These measures are designed to support both communities while maintaining regulated movement between the two countries.
