Portugal's GNR dismantles armed crime ring in dramatic Setúbal raids
Portugal’s GNR national guard has arrested four men in Palmela on suspicion of vehicle theft, drug trafficking and criminal association. The operation led to the seizure of military-grade weapons, cash and stolen vehicles.
The suspects, aged between 30 and 33, were detained after a search warrant was executed in Poceirão and Marateca, within the Setúbal district.
The arrests followed an investigation that resulted in a non-residential search warrant. GNR officers, supported by the Intervention Detachment and the Special Operations Intervention Group (GIOE), carried out the operation.
During the raid, authorities confiscated four vehicles, a recreational boat, high-powered engines and fuel. They also seized electronic equipment and €75,000 in cash. Among the weapons recovered were AK-47 and AK-74U assault rifles, a Stribog SP9A1 submachine gun, and two pistols of different calibres. Ammunition was also found. After their arrest, the four suspects were taken to the Setúbal Judicial Court. A judge ordered them to be held in preventive custody while the investigation continues.
The operation disrupted what authorities believe to be an organised criminal network. The seized weapons, cash and vehicles will remain in custody as evidence. The suspects will stay in detention pending further legal proceedings.
