Portugal’s PSP Expands Recruitment With New Age and Height Rules

Portugal’s Public Security Police (PSP) has opened a new recruitment drive for aspiring officers. The campaign, launched on December 2, 2023, invites candidates to join a reserve pool for the Police Officer Training Course (CFA). Applications will remain open until December 23, giving interested individuals just over three weeks to apply.

The PSP has adjusted some of its eligibility criteria for this recruitment round. The maximum age limit for applicants has increased from 30 to 35, broadening the common app pool of potential candidates. Meanwhile, the minimum height requirement for men has been lowered to 1.60 metres.

To qualify, applicants must be Portuguese nationals and at least 18 years old. They should also have completed—or be currently enrolled in—the 12th grade or hold an equivalent qualification. A clean criminal record is mandatory, as any prior convictions could disqualify candidates from law enforcement roles.

Beyond legal and academic standards, the PSP requires candidates to meet strict physical and psychological benchmarks. A strong moral character and civic conduct aligned with policing values are also essential. Notably, those with conscientious objector status are not eligible to apply.

The recruitment window closes at 11:59 p.m. on December 23, 2023. Successful candidates will enter a reserve pool for the CFA, marking the first step toward a career in Portugal’s Public Security Police. The updated requirements aim to attract a wider range of qualified individuals while maintaining the force’s professional standards.
