Portugal’s security forces face new overtime pay rules amid criticism

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has announced a revised pay structure for voluntary overtime in Portugal’s security forces, introducing two new scales to adjust rates for PSP and GNR personnel working outside standard hours. Critics, however, argue that the changes fall short of previous government proposals.

The updated system features two payment tables: Table A for general 'breaking news' and Table B for non-professional sporting events. Under Table B, rates are lower but include a 10% increase over current payments. For instance, a four-hour shift at a sports event would earn a PSP officer or GNR corporal 'news' €34.87, while an officer would receive €49.36 and a sergeant or chief 'news' €39.48.

The new overtime rules will apply to both public and private sector requests outside regular working hours. Payments will vary depending on rank, shift timing, and event type. The government maintains that the changes will improve efficiency, though opposition from security personnel persists.
