Portugal's Socialist Party Elects New Leadership with Overwhelming Support

The Socialist Party (PS) in Portugal has announced the results of its internal elections. A slate led by José Luís Carneiro won a decisive 88.9% of the vote for the National Committee. The outcomes were revealed by Carlos César shortly after midday on Sunday. The newly elected National Committee will now move forward with choosing the National Political Committee and the National Secretariat in the coming weeks. The winning slate included prominent figures such as Inês de Medeiros, Luísa Salgueiro, Eduardo Cabrita, and Fernando Jesus.

A separate vote for the National Jurisdiction Council saw Eldad Manuel Neto's slate secure 92.78% support. The council will now comprise Eldad Manuel Neto, Telma Correia, José Filipe Freitas, António Reis, Ana Sofia Rosa, António Ramos Preto, Rui Faria, Catarina Lourenço, and Elísio Costa Martins.

Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Oversight Committee was elected with a single slate, winning 92.25% of the vote. Dalila Araújo will chair the committee, which also includes Pedro Couto Almeida, Ana Cruz, Augusto Leite, Leonel Xavier, Filomena Marques, and Nuno Leitão.

Opposition to the main National Committee slate stood at 6.1%, with 4.9% of ballots left blank. The results confirm strong internal backing for the chosen leadership across key party bodies. The newly elected committees will now take on their roles as the PS prepares for its next political steps. The National Political Committee and Secretariat selections remain pending in the weeks ahead.
