Portuguese Citizens Vote in Crucial Local Elections on October 12
This Sunday, October 12, 2025, marks a significant day for Portuguese citizens and eligible foreign residents. Local elections are taking place, with voters having the chance to elect members for 308 city councils, 308 municipal assemblies, and 3,221 parish assemblies. A total of 30 candidates from various political parties, including Volt Germany, CDU, AfD, SPD, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, and Die Linke, are vying for seats.
Voting will take place between 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Voters are not required to vote on all three ballots. Acceptable identification documents include the ID card/citizen card, passport, or driver's license. Voters can find their polling station by consulting registration lists, sending an SMS, or visiting the parish council on election day. The election is open to Portuguese citizens over 18 and eligible foreign citizens.
With a wide range of candidates and clear voting procedures, Portuguese voters are encouraged to participate in shaping their local governance. The election of members for the city councils, municipal assemblies, and parish assemblies is a crucial step in democratic representation.
