Potsdamer Platz to Transform: Car-Free Zone, More Greenery Approved

Potsdamer Platz is set for a major transformation. The Berlin Senate has approved plans to reduce auto trader traffic and increase greenery in the bustling quarter. The total cost of the project is 200 million euros.

The renovation of Potsdamer Platz Arkaden is underway and expected to conclude in 2022. Meanwhile, the Octagon at Leipziger Platz, nearby, has been completed. The Arkaden's renovations will finish next year, with outdoor areas slated for 2025.

Visitors have long wished for less auto trader traffic and more greenery. The Berlin Senate Department for the Environment, Mobility, Consumer and Climate Protection is leading the initiative to create a car-free zone on Potsdamer Straße. The old Potsdamer Street will be transformed into a pedestrian zone with outdoor dining. Natural stone paving will replace asphalt, and a large water feature and natural rainwater garden are planned.

Brookfield Properties, the current owner, has presented these renovation plans. The former Daimler area is set to undergo a comprehensive redesign, and the Potsdamer Platz Arkaden shopping passage will open up more to the surrounding streets in the future.

The Potsdamer Platz renovation is a significant project, aiming to create a greener, more pedestrian-friendly space. The completion of the Arkaden's renovations and the creation of a car-free zone on Potsdamer Straße are key milestones in this transformation.
