Pro-Kremlin stances surge in European Parliament amid Russia-Ukraine tensions
A new analysis of voting records in the European Parliament reveals a sharp rise in 'pro-Kremlin' positions among certain political groups. The number of MEPs consistently opposing or abstaining on resolutions condemning Russia has nearly doubled since the last parliamentary cycle. Researchers at EUobserver tracked votes on 14 key resolutions related to Russia and Ukraine to identify the most prominent trends.
The study highlights Germany’s AfD as the most aligned with Kremlin interests, with 90% of its MEPs voting against resolutions critical of Russia. Other factions with strong pro-Russian stances include Patriots for Europe (PfE), Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN), The Left, and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW). Among larger parties, France’s National Rally (RN), Hungary’s Fidesz, Italy’s Lega, and AfD stand out for their frequent opposition to anti-Russia measures.
The findings underscore a growing divide within the European Parliament on Russia-related issues. While some factions maintain strong opposition to anti-Russia measures, others have hardened their support for Ukraine. The shift in French policy, alongside the consistent stances of parties like AfD and Fidesz, points to evolving political dynamics that will likely shape future EU decisions on the conflict.
