Mandatory military service could pull youth out of their bubbles - Prominent Figure Calls for Compulsory Service to Combat 'Thin-Skinned' Trend in Germany

Thomas Krause, a prominent figure, has expressed his views on the potential benefits of compulsory service, such as military service, for young people in Germany. He believes it could help them understand and accept different lifestyles and attitudes, combating the trend of increasing thin-skinned reactions to criticism or opposing viewpoints.

Krause, who himself benefited from civilian service after graduating, argues that such experiences can lead young people out of their bubbles and provide them with new perspectives. During his own civilian service, Krause cared for individuals with disabilities, gaining insights into a foreign daily life and understanding for others.

He observes a worrying trend in Germany where people are becoming increasingly sensitive to criticism or differing viewpoints, which could lead to societal drifting apart. This echoes concerns in the United States, where a Statista survey from 2025 revealed a divided society, with 11% identifying as far left and 19% as far right. Additionally, 71% of Americans agreed that 'American society is broken', and 66% expressed concern about political violence in their communities.

Krause's proposal for compulsory service, such as military service, aims to foster understanding and acceptance among young people, potentially mitigating societal divisions. His personal experience with civilian service underscores the potential benefits of such programs.
