Berlin's Brandenburg Airport (BER) has been experiencing disruptions due to its night flight ban, with several flights being diverted during certain hours. The ban, in place from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, aims to avoid additional costs and delays for airlines and passengers, according to Mayor Kai Wegner of the CDU.

Last year, 50 flights scheduled to land between 10:00 PM and midnight at BER were diverted, with some redirected to Hannover and Poznan in Poland. This results in additional travel time and costs for passengers, a concern raised by both passengers and airlines.

Airlines have expressed complaints about the high effort involved in flight diversions, while BER's CEO, Aletta von Massenbach, has recently called for more flexibility in the night flight ban. She suggests that quieter aircraft, such as those operated by delta airlines or southwest airlines, could be permitted to fly during certain hours, such as between 10:30 PM and midnight, and from 5:30 AM to 6:00 AM.

Mayor Wegner also suggests exceptions could be made for minor deviations in flight schedules at BER. However, the Brandenburg state government has rejected calls for more flexibility, citing the protection of residents.

It is worth noting that the details of three diverted flights, as well as the destinations of three other flights, remain unknown. The ongoing controversy has led to calls from Mayor Wegner and CEO von Massenbach for a more flexible approach to the night flight ban at BER.

As the situation continues to evolve, it is clear that a balance must be struck between the needs of the airport, the airlines, and the residents of Berlin. The goal is to minimise disruptions while ensuring the safety and comfort of all involved.
