PS to Abstain from 2026 State Budget Vote; Proposes João Leão as Budget Leader
The Socialist Party (PS4) is set to abstain from voting on the State Budget for 2026, according to its secretary-general Joaquim Miranda Sarmento. The decision comes after the party's leader, José Luís Carneiro, praised the budget in an interview with Negócios da Semana magazine.
In the same interview, Miranda Sarmento proposed João Leão as the candidate to lead the budget process for 2026. Before this announcement, the Minister of Finance had confidently stated that the budget would be approved. Meanwhile, Miranda Sarmento also suggested that Pedro Nuno Santos could potentially lead the Left Bloc (BE) in the future.
The PS4's abstention from the State Budget vote for 2026 signals a shift in the party's stance. With the proposed candidates and leadership changes, political dynamics in Portugal are set to evolve.
