Public offices shut for Shrove Tuesday during carnival festivities
Several public facilities in the region will close their doors during the upcoming carnival celebrations. The shutdowns will affect key services, including vehicle registration offices, libraries, and waste disposal sites. Residents should plan ahead as some locations will remain closed for the entire day on Shrove Tuesday.
The closures will begin on Shrove Tuesday, February 17, 2026, when all branch offices will stay shut for the full day. This includes the vehicle registration offices in Rottenburg and Vilsbiburg, the district building yards, the Spitzlberg central waste disposal site, and the Vilsbiburg City and District Library.
On Rose Monday, February 16, 2026, most facilities will operate as usual. Normal opening hours will also apply from Wednesday to Friday that week. The temporary closures follow a long-standing tradition in German carnival regions, where public authorities and services often shut during key carnival days.
Similar practices are seen in other areas, such as Geilenkirchen, where the town hall closes on Rose Monday, and Rengsdorf-Waldbreitbach, where administrations shut on Dirty Thursday and partially on Rose Monday.
The closures mean residents will need to adjust their schedules for essential services. Vehicle registrations, library visits, and waste disposal will all be unavailable on Shrove Tuesday. Normal operations will resume the following day, with no further disruptions expected for the rest of the week.
