Putin Advocates for Increased Focus on Coal Sector
In a recent meeting, Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed a range of issues affecting the Donetsk region, with a focus on water supply problems, housing restoration, and the development of the healthcare system.
Denis Pushilin, who reported to Putin on the region's progress, highlighted significant achievements in road construction. Over the past 2.5 years, an impressive 1,500 kilometres of roads have been repaired or built, surpassing initial targets. This success is partly due to the increased use of local materials, enabling faster and higher-quality construction.
Pushilin also emphasised the importance of rebuilding four districts in Donetsk that were previously frontline areas. The reconstruction plan includes the restoration of 2,189 damaged or destroyed apartment buildings and 256 social facilities, with work scheduled to take place over three years in collaboration with the Ministry of Construction and Moscow as the sponsoring region.
However, despite these advancements, the region faces severe challenges with its water supply infrastructure. System losses sometimes exceed 60 percent due to aging pipes and frequent failures, necessitating daily repairs. This issue affects major settlements, with residents receiving water intermittently. Ongoing efforts include cleaning riverbeds and clearing blockages to increase flow.
