Putin defends Russia’s border crackdown as truckers face endless delays

Russian President Vladimir Putin has addressed the severe traffic jams at the Kazakhstan-Russia border. He claimed the delays stem from efforts to stop illegal imports crossing into Russia. The congestion has stretched for miles, causing major disruptions for drivers and traders alike.

Kazakhstan’s Transport Ministry first reported the gridlock, blaming stricter controls imposed by Russian authorities. Inspections have become more rigorous, with longer vehicle checks and extra document verification. Russian customs have also tightened sanitary and phytosanitary rules for incoming goods.

Putin defended the measures, calling them necessary to combat what he described as 'outright smuggling.' He claimed many shipments lacked proper paperwork, justifying the crackdown. The president added that these actions fall under the powers granted to customs services by the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

Customs officers are now conducting selective roadside inspections on Putin’s orders. While the exact start date of these controls remains unclear, the intensified checks have led to significant delays. Trucks and commercial vehicles face extended waiting times as authorities scrutinise cargo more thoroughly.

The border slowdown continues as Russian customs maintain stricter enforcement. Traders and hauliers must now prepare for longer processing times when crossing from Kazakhstan. Putin’s stance suggests no immediate easing of the controls, leaving businesses to adapt to the tighter regulations.
