Putin Praises Russia's Elite Forces for Expanding Military Influence
Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated military personnel and veterans on the Day of Special Operations Forces. In his address, he recognised their role in strengthening the country's armed forces and highlighted their contributions in active conflict zones.
The remarks came as part of a broader acknowledgment of the unit's expanding influence within Russia's military structure.
Putin praised the Special Operations Forces for securing a prominent position in the Russian army within a short time. He noted their growing importance in modern warfare, particularly through the creation of mobile units equipped with advanced weaponry. These adaptations, he said, were necessary to meet 21st-century security challenges.
The president directly addressed troops deployed in special operations zones and those combating diversionary groups along border regions. He thanked them for their combat expertise, tactical skill, and personal bravery. Defence Minister Andrei Belousov also marked the occasion, commending the forces for their professionalism, rigorous training, and ability to resolve complex missions.
Russian special forces, including Spetsnaz units, have played a key role in multiple international conflicts since the early 2000s. Their operations include the 2008 war in Georgia, interventions in Syria from 2015, and deployments in Africa through groups like the Wagner mercenaries. They have also been heavily involved in the Ukraine conflict, especially since the 2022 invasion. In recent years, their activities have shifted toward hybrid warfare models, often working alongside allied nations under private military frameworks.
Putin's comments underscored the unit's contribution to Russia's military capabilities. He emphasised their role in enhancing combat readiness and responding to evolving threats, both at home and abroad.
The president's message reinforced the strategic value of Russia's Special Operations Forces. Their involvement in recent conflicts and adaptability to new warfare tactics remain central to the country's defence strategy. The annual recognition highlights their ongoing role in national security operations.
