Putin shuts down Lavrov ousting rumors ahead of US-Russia talks
Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed claims that Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has lost his support. The rumours, which spread in November 2025, suggested Lavrov was out of favour with the Kremlin.
Putin called the speculation 'nonsense' and confirmed that Lavrov remains a trusted figure. He also noted that the minister’s work schedule continues to be approved by him personally.
The reports first emerged in late 2025, with some analysts linking them to a possible reshuffle within Russia’s Foreign Ministry. Speculation grew ahead of anticipated peace talks involving the USA.
Lavrov recently briefed Putin on his diplomatic activities. He is now preparing for talks with American officials. Meanwhile, Russian advisers Vladimir Medinsky and Yuri Ushakov have been named as participants in the planned negotiations.
Putin’s public backing of Lavrov appears aimed at quashing further rumours. The president’s statement came after weeks of media discussion about Lavrov’s future role in the government.
Lavrov’s position remains secure, with Putin’s direct approval of his work. The Foreign Ministry is now focusing on the upcoming negotiations with US representatives.
Medinsky and Ushakov will join the discussions, indicating a coordinated Russian approach. The talks are expected to address ongoing diplomatic tensions between the two nations.
