Putin’s India visit revives historic ties amid Ukraine war tensions
Russian President Vladimir Putin will arrive in India on Thursday for his first visit since 2021. The trip also marks his first to the country since the start of the war in Ukraine. Locals in Varanasi welcomed him early with a traditional aarti and a march ahead of his arrival.
Putin’s two-day visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the India-Russia strategic partnership. It will also be the 23rd bilateral summit between the two nations. Upon landing, he will share a private dinner with Prime Minister Narendra Modi before receiving a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan the following day.
The visit strengthens long-standing ties between the two countries. Key outcomes will include defence agreements, economic planning, and cultural exchanges. Both nations aim to expand cooperation across multiple sectors by the end of the decade.
