Qualcomm Under Fire Again: China Probes US Chipmaker's Autotalks Acquisition
China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) has opened an investigation into US chipmaker Qualcomm, suspecting violations of the country's Anti-Monopoly Law. This isn't Qualcomm's first brush with Chinese regulators, having been fined in 2015 for similar offences.
The current probe centres around Qualcomm's acquisition of Israeli startup Autotalks. SAMR requested Qualcomm to file the acquisition for review and temporarily halt the deal in March 2024. However, Qualcomm proceeded with the transaction in June 2025 without obtaining the necessary approval. Qualcomm has admitted to these facts.
Last month, SAMR launched a separate investigation into another US chipmaker, Nvidia, for alleged Anti-Monopoly Law violations.
Qualcomm's past actions have drawn the attention of Chinese regulators once again. The company's failure to declare the Autotalks acquisition and its completion without approval are under scrutiny. SAMR's investigation is ongoing, and the outcomes remain to be seen.
