Radio Primaton Closes After 34 Years; Radio Gong Schweinfurt to Fill Void
Radio Primaton, a local radio station broadcasting since 1991, has announced its closure after over 34 years. The station, based in Schweinfurt, is the latest casualty in a crisis affecting local radio stations in Bavaria due to declining advertising revenues and dual broadcasting costs. However, Radio Gong Schweinfurt will maintain local news coverage for the region, cooperating programmatically with Radio Gong Würzburg.
Radio Primaton's insolvency proceedings began in May 2024 and were concluded in August 2025 with the help of a swift investor. The Nuremberg-based media group Neue Welle Bayern, linked to former directory publisher Müller Medien, acquired full ownership of Radio Primaton. This acquisition follows a trend of consolidation in the local radio scene, with Radio AWN in Straubing and Radio Trausnitz from Landshut merging to form maximal RADIO.
The closure of Radio Primaton follows the shutdown of RSA in the Allgäu region and extra radio in Hof. Despite RSA's closure, three competitors continue broadcasting regional updates via DAB+, encouraging listeners to switch to digital radio. Radio Gong Schweinfurt will replace Radio Primaton, shifting its music format from Adult Contemporary (AC) to Hot Adult Contemporary (Hot AC), targeting listeners aged 19-49 instead of 35-59.
The closure of Radio Primaton highlights the ongoing challenges faced by local radio stations in Bavaria. Despite the setback, Radio Gong Schweinfurt will continue to provide local news coverage, cooperating with Radio Gong Würzburg and adapting its music format to better suit its audience.
