Rahul Gandhi urges Bharat Ratna for Dalit icon Kanshi Ram in letter to PM Modi
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a formal request. He urged the government to posthumously award the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, to Kanshi Ram. The appeal coincides with Kanshi Ram's birth anniversary and seeks to recognise his lasting impact on Indian politics.
Kanshi Ram, who passed away in 2006, founded the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and became a key figure in reshaping Dalit politics. His work focused on mobilising marginalised communities to demand political representation and rights. Over the years, his efforts helped raise awareness among those historically excluded from mainstream politics.
In his letter, Gandhi stressed Kanshi Ram's dedication to turning constitutional promises of equality, dignity, and participation into reality for the oppressed. He described how Kanshi Ram transformed Indian politics by empowering marginalised groups to assert their presence in governance. While Kanshi Ram remains a respected figure, no major political parties or organisations have formally campaigned for the Bharat Ratna in the last decade. The demand to honour Kanshi Ram with the Bharat Ratna has surfaced periodically, often from Dalit intellectuals, social activists, and political leaders. However, there is no widely documented evidence of large-scale, organised efforts in recent years. The latest request revives the discussion around recognising his legacy at the national level.
The proposal to award the Bharat Ratna to Kanshi Ram now rests with the central government. If approved, it would formally acknowledge his role in advancing the political rights of marginalised communities. The decision may also influence how his contributions are remembered in India's political history.
