Rail Subsidiary Sues Over Re-tendering of Railway Line - Rail Dispute: Court to Rule on Kiel-Hamburg Line's Future on Nov 21
A legal dispute over the retendering of the rail line between Kiel and Hamburg has reached the Schleswig Higher Regional Court. The future of the Süd-West network hangs in the balance as the court prepares to deliver its final ruling on November 21.
The dispute centres around the decision to partially annul the award of the Mitte rail network, which includes the Hamburg–Kiel route and the Hamburg–Kiel/Flensburg/Tinglev line, covering roughly five million kilometers annually. The court ruled this decision unlawful. Meanwhile, the Süd-West network, covering around 2.1 million train-kilometers per year, awaits its formal contract award, pending the conclusion of legal proceedings. Nordbahn is set to retain operations there.
The legal battle began when Deutsche Bahn subsidiary DB Regio filed a lawsuit against the re-tendering of the Netz Mitte in Schleswig-Holstein. The new tender for the Mitte network concerns operations from December 2027 through at least December 2039.
The outcome of the legal dispute will significantly impact the future of rail operations in the region. The court's ruling on November 21 is eagerly anticipated by all parties involved.
