Rajshahi City Workers Demand Better Pay, Conditions
Temporary and daily wage workers of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) have been protesting for better wages and working conditions. They demand a monthly wage of Tk 22,500, implementation of the government-declared daily wage of Tk 750, and an end to recruitment irregularities. The workers, currently earning Tk 10,000-12,000 per month and Tk 484 per day, also want salaries paid by the 3rd of every month and retirement benefits.
On Wednesday, the workers held a sit-in and observed a work abstention programme. They gathered in front of the RCC building's main entrance, alleging threats of sacking and exclusion from work when they raise demands. Despite the protest, RCC CEO Rezaul Karim remains unreachable regarding the workers' demands. Currently, the workers receive no wages on Fridays and holidays, and their wages are not indexed to inflation.
The workers' demands include annual festival bonuses, written resolutions for complaints, and permanent recruitment. They seek fair compensation for their labour and an end to irregularities. The RCC has not yet responded to the workers' demands.
