Rajshahi water workers protest for job security and fair wages
Hundreds of temporary and daily wage workers from Rajshahi Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (RWSSA) have staged a protest, demanding job regularisation and fair wages. The workers, who have served for years, face financial hardships due to low pay and irregular payments, exacerbated by rising living costs.
The workers, led by Abdul Mannan, have warned of escalating their movement if their demands are not met. Mannan highlighted the struggle to support families, cover medical expenses, and educate children on their current wages. The High Court has directed RWSSA to regularise the positions of temporary and daily wage workers, following a demand made on May 14, 2023.
The workers demand immediate steps to regularise all master roll and temporary workers, many of whom have served for over a decade. They point out the disparity in benefits, with permanent workers in other Water Supply and Sewerage Authorities (WASAs) receiving retirement facilities like pension, which they do not get.
The workers, who formed a human chain to press their demands, seek job security and fair compensation. They hope that the High Court's directive and their persistent efforts will lead to a positive resolution, ensuring a better future for themselves and their families.
