Rajya Sabha elections heat up as Assam's NDA fields three candidates for March 16 vote

Rajya Sabha elections are underway to fill 37 seats across 10 states, including Assam. The polls come as the terms of three sitting members from Assam expire on April 9. Nominations closed on Thursday, with scrutiny and withdrawals set for early March before voting on March 16.

Three candidates from Assam's ruling NDA alliance filed their papers before the deadline. Senior BJP leaders Jogen Mohan and Terash Gowalla, along with Pramod Boro, president of the United People's Party Liberal, submitted their nominations. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was present during the filing.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the trio and expressed confidence in their ability to represent Assam in Parliament. Boro, meanwhile, urged MLAs from all parties to back his candidacy. He also noted that his party is gearing up for the upcoming Assembly elections in the region.

The election schedule includes scrutiny of nominations on March 6 and withdrawals by March 9. Polling and counting will both take place on March 16, with results expected by 5 pm that day. Of the 37 seats up for grabs, 28 across nine other states will be decided by indirect votes from state legislative assemblies.

The Rajya Sabha elections will determine Assam's new representatives before the current members' terms end next month. The three NDA candidates now await the outcome of the March 16 vote. Their success would secure their seats until the next biennial elections in 2026.
