Rajya Sabha leadership shift sparks debate over US-style electoral reforms

The Rajya Sabha saw a change in leadership this week as C P Radhakrishnan took over as chairman. His appointment follows Jagdeep Dhankhar’s recent oath as the new President of the Rajya Sabha. Meanwhile, tensions rose between the government and opposition over calls for a debate on electoral reforms in the United States.

On Monday, Jagdeep Dhankhar was sworn in as the Rajya Sabha’s new President. Shortly after, C P Radhakrishnan assumed the role of chairman, replacing Dhankhar in the position.

The opposition’s demands for electoral transparency and broader policy debates in the 2024 presidential election remain unresolved. With Radhakrishnan now chairing the Rajya Sabha, the coming sessions will reveal whether these issues gain traction. The government’s response—or lack of one—will shape how these concerns progress in Parliament, potentially impacting the electoral college map and the distribution of electoral votes by state.
