Rangmandal’s revival stalls as Bharat Bhavan and NSD debate its future
The revival of Rangmandal, Bharat Bhavan's theatre repertory, has sparked debate and anticipation. Established in 1984 under theatre legend BV Karanth, the repertory seeks a budget of Rs 7 crore annually. An MoU signed on October 11 between National School of Drama (NSD) and Bharat Bhavan aims to revive it, but a month later, progress on the ground remains unclear.
The MoU, signed in the presence of Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, envisions NSD advising but not controlling the repertory. However, the format, structure, and appointment process for the director and artistes remain uncertain. Director Culture NP Namdev assured that the MoU will be followed, but provided no firm timeline for the launch.
Meanwhile, a section of local artistes opposes NSD's involvement, arguing that the city has sufficient talent to run Rangmandal. Discussions are ongoing between Bharat Bhavan and NSD to prepare a format and decide on the director and artistes. The revival was first announced in February 2022 by then Culture Minister Usha Thakur and endorsed by the Chief Minister.
Over a month after the MoU signing, the groundwork for Rangmandal's revival is yet to begin. While NSD's involvement is controversial, both parties continue discussions to finalize the format and structure. The budget of Rs 7 crore remains a crucial factor in moving the project forward.
