Rapid cycleway our organization - Nuremberg: First section opened, expansion with challenges

A new stretch of the express bike highway between Fürth and Nuremberg has officially opened. The 250-metre section in Zirndorf marks the first step in a larger project aimed at improving cycling connections across the region. Despite delays and challenges, local leaders remain confident about the route’s future completion.

The opening ceremony took place on December 19, 2025, following nine weeks of construction by Strabag. The firm built the 4-metre-wide path at a cost of around €350,000. Some finishing touches, such as road markings and lighting, are still pending but should be in place by March 2026.

The project had faced a hurdle earlier when Oberasbach City Council chose not to sign the expansion agreement. However, the newly opened section fills a missing link in the cycling network, offering a direct route for commuters. At the handover, District Administrator Bernd Obst, Andreas Eisgruber, and Mayor Thomas Zwingel formally transferred the path to Zirndorf. The inauguration itself had been announced much earlier, with Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter attending a preliminary event in May 2024. Despite the setback in Oberasbach, the District of Fürth and its partners continue to push forward with the wider bike highway plans.

The completed section in Zirndorf provides an early glimpse of the planned high-speed bike route. Once fully realised, the expressway will connect Fürth and Nuremberg, offering a faster and safer cycling option. For now, the focus remains on finishing the remaining details and securing further agreements for expansion.
