Rare ‘Vande Mataram’ artifacts from India’s freedom struggle to be presented to President and PM
Noted historian Zafar Ansari from Indore is set to present a unique collection of historic artifacts to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The presentation marks 150 years since Bankimchandra Chatterji penned 'Vande Mataram' in 1875.
The collection includes multi-coloured silver and metal buttons, engraved with 'Vande Mataram' and featuring the charkha emblem. These buttons were once worn by Indian revolutionaries during the freedom struggle. Ansari's museum also houses over 20 rare 78 RPM gramophone records of 'Vande Mataram' in Bengali, Marathi, and Hindi, including a 110-year-old recording, one of the oldest surviving versions of the song.
A highlight of the collection is a rare replica of the Berlin Committee Flag (Madam Cama Flag), first unveiled in 1907. The flag bears eight lotuses on a green stripe, 'Vande Mataram' in the centre, and a red stripe with a shining sun and crescent moon. Additionally, the museum preserves historic 'Vande Mataram' pots, worn by Indian revolutionaries during liberation struggles, which will also be handed over to the dignitaries.
Through this initiative, Ansari seeks to honour the enduring legacy of 'Vande Mataram' as a timeless ode to India's unity, strength, and devotion to the motherland. The presentation of these artifacts serves as a reminder of the song's pivotal role in India's struggle for independence and its continued relevance today.
