RBB Slashes Payroll Costs by €22M to Boost Programming Quality
Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB) has announced plans to reduce personnel costs by €22 million. The move, led by program director Robert Skuppin, aims to redirect savings into programming rather than layoffs. Skuppin has headed the broadcaster since October 2022, taking over after his predecessor’s resignation over reporting errors.
Skuppin replaced Katrin Günther, who stepped down following criticism of flawed journalism at RBB. Since then, he has pushed for a stronger focus on programming quality and staff morale. His latest cost-cutting plan targets payroll expenses, with €9 million earmarked for operational bills and €13 million reinvested into content marketing.
The €22 million reduction in payroll costs will fund programming and cover expenses. Skuppin’s strategy aims to balance financial discipline with creative investment. The broadcaster’s next steps will determine how effectively the savings translate into improved content.
