Reader's Digest New Zealand Bids Farewell to Print, Goes Online After 75 Years
After 75 years of dominating newsstands, Reader's Digest New Zealand is bidding farewell to its printed edition. The magazine, once a staple in Kiwi households, will now be available exclusively online, a shift accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
At its peak, Reader's Digest New Zealand was selling between 100,000 to 150,000 copies, reaching a wide audience across the country. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has taken a toll on print sales, with numbers dropping to about 30,000 copies.
Sheron White, general manager of publish and sales for Asia Pacific Reader's Digest, confirmed the print edition's discontinuation. The magazine, which once boasted a global presence in 51 countries and 21 languages, will now be published online by Bauer Media, a move that began in 2016.
The transition to an online-only platform means Reader's Digest New Zealand will be free to access for all. The discontinuation of the print edition has been widely advertised, with notifications appearing in newspapers, social media, and letters to subscribers. After 75 years, the magazine enters a new chapter, embracing the digital age.
