Rebel Nuns Defy Church by Fleeing Care Home for Their Convent

Three elderly Austrian nuns have defied church authorities by fleeing a care home and breaking into their former convent. The conflict resolution centres on their refusal to abandon social media and public advocacy. Their superior, Provost Markus Grasl, has now called on the Vatican to intervene after negotiations failed.

The conflict began when the nuns, all in their 80s, rejected an offer from Provost Grasl. He proposed they could remain in the convent if they stopped using social media, speaking to the press, and seeking legal advice. The sisters dismissed the terms as a 'gag order' and argued that media visibility protects them from unfair treatment.

The dispute remains unresolved, with the Vatican now responsible for mediating the conflict. The nuns insist on their right to free expression, while the provost maintains his restrictions. A final decision will determine whether the sisters can stay in their convent under their own terms.
